I spent twelve years in the field, much of it at Colorado Outward Bound School, running trips, managing staff, and answering for what happened when things went wrong.

The work taught me that the hardest part of professional outdoor operations is not the terrain. It is the record. Decisions get made far from any office, under fatigue and weather and real consequences, and then they have to be explained to a director, an insurer, an accreditation body, or a parent, sometimes months later.

Every program I worked with relied on the same patchwork to do this: binders, spreadsheets, group texts, and memory. It worked until it did not. The moments that mattered most, an incident, an audit, a near-miss review, were exactly the moments the patchwork failed.

AlpenOS is the system I wished I had. It makes the record a byproduct of running the trip, not a second job after it. It assumes the field is offline, the staff are tired, and the stakes are real.
